About the Instructor

Carl Rosa - Sushi Instructor, Tour Guide to Japan

Carl Rosa, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, faced a life-altering challenge in 2005 when he and his wife, Sonya, lost everything to Hurricane Katrina, forcing them to start over. After moving to Houston, Carl founded "The Sushi Club of Houston," which quickly grew to 17,000 members in just seven years. In 2012, he shifted the organization’s focus 'sushi dinners' to 'sushi instruction' - teaching people how to create exceptional sushi at home. His classes expanded to Austin, San Antonio, Colorado Springs, Castle Rock, Steamboat Springs and Denver. In 2007, Carl began leading tours to Japan, and now, has visited the country over 90 times; still offering tours throughout the year. Known for his fun, straightforward approach to sushi, the success of his classes allowed him to semi-retire in 2021, choosing to teach only three or four sushi classes per week and limiting his visits to Japan to five times a year. Having celebrated nearly 30 years of marriage with Sonya, Carl now dedicates his free time to studying the Japanese philosophies of Kaizen and Ikigai, enjoying classical music (especially Beethoven), and creating Japanese cultural videos on YouTube.
